OHIO WATER FOR PEOPLE COMMITTEE REFLECTS ON A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2003

Water For People (WFP) is the charity of choice for AWWA, and is an organization dedicated to helping people in developing countries obtain safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and public health education. During 2003 OAWWA raised over $16,000 for WFP.   A big boost came from the numerous fundraisers we sponsored at the OAWWA Conference in Cincinnati, September 22-26, 2003 where we raised over $5000 in just 4 days of fundraising.   The Greater Cincinnati Water Works WFP Committee held various fundraisers in January of 2003 raising $2,600 to donate to the Ohio Section, once again making them a WFP Village Sponsor. Congratulations go to the Butler County Department of Environmental Services who raised $1,256 and became a WFP Community Sponsor for the year 2003.   Other notable donors include the Lang Foundation ($2000), Woolpert LLP ($1000), the Manufacturer's Advisory Council ($2200), Engineers Club of Columbus ($500), and Tetra Tech ($150).   Also, under the direction of Keith Riley, Ohio EPA and the new OWEA WFP Coordinator, our joint fund-raising efforts with the OWEA got underway.   This new and exciting partnership raised over $1000 dollars in 2003 for WFP. Add all of these donations with the 50-50 split–the-pots run by all of our District's across the state during their meetings, honorariums for birthdays, Christmas, Bosses Day, and personal donations and you have a very successful year!   One of the major highlights of 2003 was the honor paid to Ann deGroot, former Ohio AWWA WFP Chair. Ann was the worthy recipient of the Kenneth J. Miller Founder's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to WFP.

WATER FOR PEOPLE LOOKS FORWARD TO 2004

The Ohio Section is looking forward to another active and challenging year in 2004. We plan to hold our usual fund raising 50-50's at the District Meetings, training sessions and conferences.   We are looking forward to expanding our partnership with OWEA.   Our first OAWWA WFP Committee Meeting for 2004 will be held on February 5, 2004 at the Max and Erma's Restaurant in the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, I-71, (Exit #50) at US 68 (Wilmington exit) starting at noon.   The second OWFP Committee Meeting will be held in conjunction with the April 15 th SW District Meeting at Deer Creek Lodge.   We plan to meet on July 20 th in conjunction with the SW District Meeting in Green County and again during the OAWWA Conference in September in Toledo.
