Director's Report Bob Stevenson |
|
The Board of Directors met in New Orleans at our annual conference. At
this conference, Lynn Stovall of the South Carolina Section took over as
the President of AWWA. Our own Ron Schwarzwalder passed the gavel and
became the immediate past-president. Ron has worked tireless for the
organization and has handled some tough situations with great dignity.
He has served in the finest tradition of the Ohio Section and we should
all be proud to have him in our section, as well as call him our friend.
AWWA had a very financially challenging year in 2001. AWWA has taken some positive steps to address the situation and our overall financial condition for 2002 remains stable. During April, the AWWA Staff reviewed the first four months financial performance. Based on this work, the Staff reduced the revenue projections by 1.2 million dollars. Expenses were also reduced by a similar amount by eliminating some travel, training and eliminating salaries. This was not easy, however, necessary. At this Board Meeting, three individuals expressed an interest in becoming AWWA President. They are Terry Rolan from North Carolina, Katie McCain from Texas and Dave Rexing from the Standards Council and the California-Nevada Section. All of the candidates are quality individuals and the Board of Directors will select our next President at the Winter Board meeting in January 2003. Of importance to the Ohio Section is the fact that Marlay Price is now the President-elect and he will be taking office in Anaheim next year. We should all plan on celebrating with Marlay in Anaheim. The Ohio Section has an unusual situation in that we have four individuals on the Board of Directors. Ron Schwarzwalder is Immediate Past President, Marlay Price is President-elect, Curtis Truss is Director at large and I am the Ohio International Director. Hopefully, we can all work to improve the organization. A topic of discussion at the National Conference Board meeting involved the Young Professional Group. AWWA is encouraging Young Professional to get involved with the organization. In fact, the YP's, as they are called, performed a skit of us OP's, old professionals. It was quite entertaining. This is the future of the organization and we should help or mention any YP's that we can. Finally, I would like to extend a personal word of thanks to Mike Caprella, our outgoing Director. He worked with me at the Board Meeting and was very helpful. The Ohio Section has four members on the Board of Directors primarily because of Mike's efforts. Mike campaigned for our candidates and was successful. The next time you see Mike, thank him for his efforts. Let him know that good deeds deserve recognition. If you have questions or suggestions, I can be reached at 419-245-1235.
